Change in Society
Humanity is no longer the same.
It started with the spread of a new religion. People began to worship the eight gods and goddesses of the New Elements, Physical and Mental combined. No one knew that eventually, their worship would bring this huge change.
The First Generation were born with much hype. After the first eight were born with their new marks, everyone began to rejoice. Life has changed since then.
Society is still the same, and everyone is human. Children are born normally, and life goes on, except for those born with Mugatts, marks of the New Elements. At birth, these marks glow the color of their elemental clan (one of eight), and they are sinceforth known as Destined. Society, having become accustomed to the Destined children, treat them totally normal and like normal children growing up.
Of course, all of that changes once they hit high school. Instantly these children are thrown into turmoil and forced to move to large schools known as The Prepatory Elemental Academy. Each continent has a branch of this academy, its largest and oldest branch being the North American academy. These children are no longer taught like normal students. They are seperated into their clans and given specialized schedules to help carve their elemental ties. Of course, religion is a big part of this school as well. Alhough not the entire world has followed the new Eleka religion, it is the most important thing for Destined children and adults.
The School
The Prepatory Elemental Academy (North American branch) is extremely large. The building is a castle design, spreading over 600,000 square feet. The building includes eight sets of co-ed dorms, one for each elemental clan, four buildings for classes (physical classes like gym or sports, educational classes, physical elements' classes, mental elements' classes), and a teachers' building for their sleeping arrangements and such. There is also an extremely large cafeteria off to the far right of the schoolgrounds. All of these buildings (except the cafeteria) center around an enormous courtyard, with a towering fountain in the center. This courtyard is filled with benches, picnic tables, dazzling vegetation and a few large oak trees. Students tend to lounge there.
The school's most interesting building is its religious hall, or cathedral. The large building follows the rest of the school's light cathedral design, with dazzling window designs. The bottom floor is used for rituals, worship, and the general public. The second floor is the infirmary and confinement centers. Finally, the third floor (a large loft space) is inhabited by the Headmistress.
Unlike popular belief, the school has a light architectural influence and is not a gothique design. The buildings are constructed of light brown adobe and bricks, and nothing is vampiric looking in nature.
At this school, students have specialized classes that tend to their personal needs. The school has six class periods, and each year will bring new classes for each student. Depending on their element, they will be assigned a certain class each day to attend to their new elemental ties and powers coming out.
Religion is a huge part of school. Once every three months, there is a large ceremony for the elements to cleanse the school and for students to worship. Being this religious never stops school drama, though.
Students do not drop out of this school. Here, they simply finish school and go to the real world. They are not more successful than other humans, nor do they keep the abilities the elements allowed them to use, as all graduating seniors who aren't going to Barcelona (religious capital and main settlement of religious monks and nuns) or becoming teachers must go through The Lock. Therefore, they will return to society with their marks, but without their elemental abilities. The experience here will merely bring them closer to their religion.
The Elements' Powers and Gods
Each element has its own god or goddess. There are eight elements, four physical and four mental. The physical elements (air, earth, water, fire) are very common to find amongst Destined children, fire being the rarest. The mental elements (light, darkness, energy, spirit) are rare to Destined children in particular, darkness being the rarest of all elements to find. Each of the elements assign themselves to random children at birth and mark their heads. With every different mark, there is a different ability.
Each element has its opposite. Here they are:
Air-earth
Water-fire
Energy-spirit
Light-darkness
The opposite of one's element is an element they will not agree with. So, for example, the Fire clan and the Water clan do not agree with each other whatsoever. Cross-clan friendships are normal, though.
The ROLEPLAY
In Defined Marks, we roleplay the North American branch of The Prepatory Elemental Academy. After a student graduates, you don't roleplay them anymore (unless they become a teacher). This roleplay is ONLY on the school, not the outside world. This is a literate to advanced roleplay and will not take anything below that.
Teachers are graduated students who wished to stay. Religion IS a big part of this roleplay, so don't be offended by this religious point of view (even if it is a fictatious religion).
